Purchasing Joinerysoft’s Joinery Management Software (JMS) nearly two years ago, Robert Laverack owner of Laverack Joinery Ltd acknowledges that though it seemed a big step at the time, two years on he wouldn’t let anyone take the software away from him.
Embedded into the joinery manufacturing business the easy to use software system, JMS, has removed the need for a dedicated office manager. This means that all Laverack’s joiners can remain in the workshop, while Robert can single handed design, quote, order materials, produce cutting lists for the workshop, delivery notes and even invoice. The comprehensive software reduces duplication of effort by providing all these functions automatically from initial design.
Laverack Joinery formed 28 years ago by Robert Laverack who from a construction family saw the need for a joinery manufacturing business in his home area of York. The company provide a wide range of traditional, custom sized joinery including sliding sash windows, casement windows, doors, curved & shaped work, conservatories & garden rooms, and staircases as well as bookcases, bars and counter work. Trained as a bench hand joiner himself Robert has always been keen to invest in the next generation by taking on apprentices. The family run business has been so successful in retaining their staff that all Laverack Joinery’s 8 full time joiners started as apprentices with the company. The latest apprentice also looks to follow in their footsteps. Robert says, “Retaining the staff I’ve trained guarantees skills quality.” With 90% of their work coming from recommendations they have an excellent reputation in the area for providing high quality joinery.
Supplying mostly to trade, Laverack’s supply joinery items without installation, however they remain competitive by expanding their services to include factory finishing such as factory glazing and full top coat spray paint finish in most RAL colours. They also provide U-Value Certificates for builders to pass on to their end customers, ensuring compliance with building regulations. This attention to customer service and detail is reinforced within JMS which automatically provides U-Values for all external joinery and easily and quickly prices and details paint finishes for all joinery. Robert comments, “When CE markings come out next year manufacturers will have no option but to provide U-Values. Without JMS I don’t know how joinery manufacturers will cope.”
With no previous experience of software for joinery manufacturing, Robert has been able to learn JMS with just the initial two days training. Noticing a difference immediately, Robert says, “Pricing is a pleasure now. It used to be daunting but I can get quotes out of the way instantly now. I don’t need to worry about whether it is right - one of the reasons I chose JMS is the accuracy and speed to price & produce custom joinery.” He adds, “A customer recently had a rush job but wanted to have 3 quotes before placing the order. Five days after I provided my quote to him he still hadn’t had a single response from other manufacturers, so he placed the order with me.” Being able to quickly provide professional quotations with true scale diagrams and timber, glass, and fittings detailed certainly gives Laverack’s a head start with winning orders.
Estimating that JMS has saved him 20 hours per week just on quoting this is not the only benefit of the software however. Robert adds, “JMS allows me to quote approx 70% quicker over my previous method. The time savings aren’t limited to the office though. I calculate that jobs as a whole are completed 20% quicker now, resulting in more productivity and faster invoicing. With JMS automatically generating invoices even that has saved me time too.”
Robert concludes, “JMS has brought efficiency improvements, and helps me to provide a professional image to my customers. Responding quickly to customer enquiries ensures that the first impression is also a good one.” He adds, “I use JMS everyday and wouldn’t let anyone take it away from me now!”
